The Monotype Material Maker went into commercial production in 1923. It is used to cast strip material, including leading, slugs and fancy borders. The machine casts strip material that can be continuous or automatically cut to a pre-set length. The strip material can be cast in thicknesses from 1 to 18 point, either under-type-high (non-printing) or type-high (printing).
This machine, along with a number of matrices, are from the foundry of C. Christopher Stern. We expanded our collection of matrices in 2011 through multiple donations.
