Three of us—Rebecca, Brian, and Joe—represented the C.C. Stern Type Foundry at the 40th Anniversary ATF Conference, held at M&H Type in San Francisco, August 23—26. We came home with some new perspectives on old information, including insights from T.H. Groves about the way alloy proportions affect the behavior of Thompson casters. Maybe that will help us in our wrestling with Thompson #120. All in all, the conference was a good opportunity to see old friends, meet new ones, and remind ourselves that if we can’t solve the world’s problems, they at least seem very far away when we’re casting metal type or printing with it.
